As the UK Parliament gathers today to debate the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, our hearts and minds as Seventh-day Adventists across the United Kingdom and Ireland are drawn to foundational biblical truths regarding life, death, and human dignity.
Scripture teaches that life is a sacred gift from God, who forms and numbers our days (Genesis 1:27; Psalm 139:13–16). Because God alone is the author of life, we believe that human beings do not possess the moral authority to intentionally terminate life or hasten death.
We recognise the intense emotional weight of this topic, as many of us have watched cherished loved ones suffer. Yet, our faith challenges us to view terminal illness not as a loss of human value, but as a time when God’s sustaining grace and the church’s ministry of presence are most desperately needed. While we feel profound empathy for those experiencing severe pain, we must firmly distinguish between alleviating suffering through comprehensive palliative care and actively ending life. True Christian compassion calls us to walk faithfully alongside the vulnerable with love, medical comfort, and spiritual support never abandoning them.
Furthermore, our ultimate hope is not anchored in attempting to control the timing of our departure, but in the glorious promise of the resurrection through Jesus Christ, who declared, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).
